Kolkata has an age-old romance with Chinese Cuisines. There are quite a number of good restaurants serving Chinese/oriental cuisines. But bringing in a plethora of authentic food is always greeted with wide arms in Kolkata.
Mamagoto, I had heard, for quite some time now, is one such authentic place for Pan Asian cuisines. ‘Mamagoto‘ is a tradition of dining where kids are encouraged to play with their foods to understand the texture, smell and shape of the food. Mamagoto over its span, has taken oriental dining to a new level and when I visited the place I found out, why so.
Ambience
The place was neat and spacious. Like most oriental restaurants of the city, Mamagoto too had a dim oriental ambience with nice courteous staffs.
What we ordered?
1990s Chilli Chicken; Prawn wrapped in bacon; Apple cinnamon Sangria; Wok Tossed Noodles with Stir Fried Vegetables/Chicken in Black bean sauce.
‘1990s Chilli Chicken’ is something I personally liked. You see, some food feels good off right away mostly it reminds you of a memory. Such dishes are interesting and relishable. You all must have seen the evolution of Chilli Chicken. ‘1990s Chilli Chicken’ takes you back to your childhood days. The chickens were soft with a crispy thin outer layer.

“Prawn wrapped in bacon” is a very different version of bacon wrapped prawn I had in many places. To put it clearly, it is a succulent piece of prawn wrapped in crispy fried bacon. Often, people tend to overdo the bacon and char it. Mamagoto had fried the bacon in a very precise way. Now comes the interesting part. A very unique sauce is poured on this entire thing. On asking, I got to know that the sauce is made with BBQ sauce and slow roasting pork fat. Hence the mix of fresh prawns wrapped in crispy bacon with sprinkled sesame to give a toasty feel, in a kind of sweet and spicy sauce with the undertone taste of smoke. Brilliant!

“Wok Tossed Noodles with Stir Fried Vegetables/Chicken in Black bean sauce” is a classical Fried Noodles with Vegetables and chicken in black bean sauce. The names pretty elaborate by itself. The vegetables were not soggy yet not very raw and the chicken was tender. The taste was appropriately salty and spicy with a hint of sweet, typical black bean but very smooth.

We also had “Apple cinnamon Sangria” which was light and refreshing. The taste of Cinnamon in the Apple Sangria was something unique and pleasant. The green apples were fresh and good.
I loved my experience with Mamagoto and I give 4 out of 5. Would love to visit again to taste their plethora or other oriental cuisines.
