The Orient

I have frequented this place quite a number of time in the recent past and honestly liked it. So, I’ll club most of the dishes and break my review into.

** I have updated my review based on my subsequent visits. However, I have not removed my old reviews and views.

Ambience (and Staff):  4
I loved their proper lighting. The slow classical 90s rock, sometimes jazz too, makes a perfect combination, at least for my taste. But my experience with the staffs has been mixed. Once it was a courteous, prompt and informative gentleman, another time, the waiter was in hurry and had a condescending tone, when asked about the food. This is not an experience that diners cherish.
** I had visited orient, two more times. Both the times, the service has been prompt and fast. The staff was courteous and informative. I believe the staff issue has been resolved as of now.

Foods I ordered:  Chili Onion Pork; Prawn Tempura; Tangra Chili Prawn; Pomfret Chili and Lemon Grass; Stir-Fried XO Udon Noodles; Mixed Wok Fried Noodles; Stir-Fried Chicken with Assorted Mushrooms and ginger sauce; Signature Coconut Dessert.

Quality: 4
The quality of the ingredients has been fresh and good consistently. The vegetables in Wok Fried Noodles were fresh, the prawns were fresh and tender.

Preparation: 3
Sometimes a cook can mess things up even with a set of good ingredients. Sometimes or perhaps for some dishes.

Chili Onion Pork was very well made and tender. The strong flavor of Soya was optimum enough not to distract me from the meat. The onions, however, were soggy and a tad bit overcooked. But I will overlook that because I tasted lemons too, and I loved the soya lemon duo in a simple dish like Chili Pork. Much appreciated.

Prawn Tempura and Tangra Chili Prawn  were nothing out of ordinary and didn’t find anything new in the dish. I’d suggest Tangra Chili Prawn over Tempura though.

Pomfret Chili and Lemon Grass was disappointing. The entire dish was murdered by the overcooked pomfrets. It was terribly chewy that it made me think if it was pre-fried once or not.

Signature Coconut Dessert  was a hit. I don’t know the exact name but I had it thrice and loved it. If you like coconut, this dessert is just for you. Served on a half coconut with vanilla ice cream. I absolutely loved it. This one is a must try.
** Its called “Thai Coconut“.

Stir-fried Assorted Mushroom with garlic and Soya  was pleasant. The mushrooms were fresh and the sour taste of Soya with the strong garlic gave a unique yet familiar taste. liked it. However, I felt that it was a tad bit salty. And the dish shed water sooner than expected. That might have been due to the excess salt. But, served hot, I liked it.

Thai basil Singapore Chilli shrimp  is  a hit dish I would order this again and again. The shrimp was fresh and not rubbery and perfectly fried. Deep fried Shrimps with hot spices and the aromatic flavor of basil just made it a wonder. Absolutely loved it.

Hong Kong style roasted sliced lamb with pakchoi and mushroom  was nothing very fancy. Carefully made. The meat was tender and well cooked. The Pak Choi was not overcooked. It was served with button mushrooms. The dish was a tad bit sweet-sour-ish, mostly due to the hong kong style sauce but very adequate.

Presentation: 4
The plates were clean and the plating was interestingly and thoughtfully done. Even for dishes like Chili Prawn and Pork, it was properly arranged and not a clump of a mess.

Overall: 4
I would love to visit The Orient and see what more magic the Chef can conjure up for me. Wish them all good luck.
